Scott, Colleagues Calls Out Biden Administration’s Attempt to Bypass the Senate with Radical Labor Nominee

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), led his Senate colleagues in a letter to President Biden, calling out his attempt to circumvent the Senate confirmation process by indefinitely installing Julie Su to serve as acting Labor Secretary. Su’s Senate nomination has spent nearly five months in limbo as the Biden administration has failed to garner the necessary support within the Democrat-controlled Senate to secure her confirmation. The senators also urged President Biden to immediately withdraw Su’s nomination and work with the Senate to nominate a suitable candidate for the role.

Joining Senator Scott in signing the letter are Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Miss.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.),  Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and John Cornyn (R-Texas).

“Instead of withdrawing Ms. Su’s nomination and pursuing a candidate who can receive the necessary Senate support to be confirmed, recent media reports indicate that your administration feels ‘emboldened’ to sidestep the Senate confirmation process and leave Ms. Su to lead the Labor Department in an acting capacity indefinitely,” wrote the senators. “It is absolutely unacceptable for your administration to do an end-run around the constitutional obligation to seek the advice and consent of the Senate – particularly for a nominee that has already demonstrated an inability to garner the necessary votes for confirmation. We urge you to respect the will of the Senate and withdraw Ms. Su’s nomination.”
