WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) joined Trey Gowdy’s Sunday Night in America on Fox News to discuss the future of education and his hope for America as the new year begins.

On the role of the federal government in education … “[On] the issue of education, [the federal government] should have a minimal role. … Let’s just be frank. About 10 percent of the money for education on the local level comes from Washington, D.C., but 90 percent of the strings also come from D.C. We should probably equalize that a little bit. We need to cut some of the red tape so those 50 laboratories of democracy actually work for the kids. We need a system designed for kids in local areas, not for adults in Washington, D.C.”

On his message for young people heading into the new year … “… I’d tell them three things — it’s one of the messages I love to share. … Number one, I’d say that America is the story of redemption. We need to remember to fail forward because, in life, you’re going to have hard times — you’re going to have struggles — but fail forward. Don’t fail backward, but fail forward. That means that we don’t count the number of times you get knocked down. In America, we count the number of times you get up.

“Number two, America is the story of sacrifice. In other words, if you want to stand out in life, stand up for those who can’t stand for themselves. That’s why our nation is such an exceptional place to live — because we find people going the extra mile for each other every single day.

“And finally, hold on to your dreams. The American Dream is within our grasp. There’s an old scripture that says that we are able, through God, to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or imagine. That’s good news. Our kids need to see the best of who we are, and that gives us a chance to live that dream.”

On his goals for 2022 … “Well, you know, 2022 is about making continuous improvement. … I want to do more homework on how to make America a better place and how to market that. We should not spend more time on the darker angels that [seem] to be overcast over this country. We should be piping hope into every corridor of this country.”
