Scott Virtual Tour Highlights Partnership Between OZ and Universities

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) released the following statement on the fifth stop on his nationwide Virtual Opportunity Zones Tour, highlighting student-led collaboration between Arizona State University’s Luminosity Lab and Lane College. Through this tour, Senator Scott is sharing good news from cities and towns across America as their citizens work together to create new jobs and breathe new life into their communities. 
 
“The partnership between Arizona State University and Lane College is a blueprint for the limitless possibilities Opportunity Zones are creating across the country,” said Senator Scott. “Not only are students getting hands on experience by helping revitalize Jackson, Tennessee, they’re creating tangible opportunities for generations to come. This partnership is the perfect example of a win-win scenario where the community, students, and investors all benefit from the relationship. I can’t wait to see where the project will be in the days, months, and years to come.”

Background

  • Arizona State University is home to the Luminosity Lab, a student-led think tank that spearheads challenges for clients in industry, academia and government, to build a community hub for student-driven innovation.
  • Lane College, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located in a Jackson, Tennessee Opportunity Zone, recently acquired land adjacent to their campus that they intend to transform into a community hub that will include retail stores, a restaurant, and an event center.
  • Students from Arizona State University and Lane College have partnered up to work with commercial developers to attract investors to the project creating jobs for the community and students attending the HBCU.
