Senator Scott Statement Celebrating the Start of Black History Month

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) released the following statement celebrating the first day of Black History Month. 

“After a year that at times has left our country feeling more divided than ever, it is my hope that we come together this month to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans to our nation’s history and the future we hope to create for the next generation,” said Senator Tim Scott. “Strong South Carolinians like Mary McLeod Bethune, Septima Clark, and Justice Ernest Finney dedicated their lives to ensuring black and brown children had educational opportunities that they did not have themselves. Their collective contributions, and the work of so many others, shaped the lives of this generation’s trailblazers and brought us all closer to the America of opportunity we are striving towards.

“For the first time in our 51-year history of celebrating Black History Month, we will miss the voice of one of our country’s most iconic civil rights leaders, my friend and former colleague, Congressman John Lewis. I will never forget his advice to me: ‘Never let the challenges of life make you bitter.’ My prayer for our country is that we follow Congressman Lewis’ advice—that we unite behind a shared purpose of turning our challenges into opportunity and hope for a better tomorrow.”
