Sen. Scott, Rep. Walker Call for Continued Support for Pell Grants

Washington, D.C. – This week, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) reached out to the Senate and House Appropriations Committees to ask for their support in maintaining the federal Pell Grant program, and to help establish year-round access to Pell Grants.

In a letter, Scott and Walker wrote, “The Pell Grant is a vital resource for expanding access and affordability to higher education for some of America’s most vulnerable and non-traditional students. In AY2013-2014, roughly 83% of Pell Grant recipients came from a household earning $30,000 or less annually…. Access to Pell Grants is particularly important to students attending Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI’s). Around 70% of students attending an HBCU in 2017 will do so using a Pell Grant…”
