Scott Praises Work of School Choice Options During National Charter Schools Week

Charleston, SC – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), a leading advocate for school choice in the United States Senate, issued the following statement highlighting the importance of school choice during National Charter Schools Week, which runs from May 1 through May 7, 2016.

“Each year, we take time to celebrate the amazing work of charter schools and their many successes during National Charter School Week. Acrossour greatcountry, teachers and school leaders, parents and volunteers are working hard to provide good, high performing schools for our children.

Today, charter schools are responsible for driving diverse, creative new innovations in the educational arena. They play a critical role in delivering options for families and communities. Throughout our country and here in South Carolina, every year charter schools are serving more and more families and can be found in more and more communities.

I have long believed that more educational freedom for families is important to meet the needs of our children. That’s why I will continue to advocate for school choice in the Senate, including magnet programs, virtual learning, private schools, homeschooling and charter schools.

As we celebrate, I hope South Carolinians take the time to honor the important work charter school teachers, leaders and advocates continue to do on behalf of our next generation.”

According to the Public Charter School Alliance of South Carolina, there are 68 public charter schools that serve nearly 30,000 students around the Palmetto State. Charter schools have been an option for families since 1996 when the State Charter School Law was enacted.
