Sen. Tim Scott, local leaders celebrate new legislation surrounding Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) – Senator Tim Scott was in the Lowcountry on Friday to celebrate after President Trump signed the Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historic Park Act into law this week.

That legislation makes both Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie national parks instead of national monuments.

The change won’t affect daily operations, but leaders say it honors the free and enslaved workers who built the forts and the soldiers who defended them.

Fort Sumter was previously a national monument, but Fort Moultrie wasn’t. Now, it’s too be honored for its role in our history.

Sen. Scott and Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said it’s that history which makes the Lowcountry a top tourist destination and said when it comes to tourism, the words ‘national’ and ‘park’ are big deal.
