Senator Scott Continues to Champion Law Enforcement, Thanks Officers on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

WASHINGTON — Today, on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) thanked the brave men and women who protect and serve communities throughout South Carolina and across the country and vowed to continue championing commonsense solutions to support law enforcement, restore law and order and keep Americans safe.

“Each and every day, law enforcement officers put on their uniform and lay their lives on the line to protect our families,” said Senator Scott. “As crime skyrockets across the country and record numbers of illegal border crossings overwhelm our communities, supporting the brave men and women who keep us safe has never been more important. I remain committed to delivering solutions that will empower law enforcement – not undermine them – restore law and order, protect Americans and crush the violent crime that destroys lives.”

Senator Scott is championing legislation to support law enforcement officers at the local, state and federal levels, crack down on violent crime and secure our southern border, including:

• The Keep Our Border Agents Paid Act, which ensures U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and contractors continue to be paid in the event of a shutdown as President Biden’s southern border crisis continues to spiral out of control;
• The Back the Blue Act of 2023, which would increase penalties for criminals who target law enforcement officers and provide new tools for officers to protect themselves;
• The Combating Violent and Dangerous Crime Act , which resolves discrepancies brought on by conflicting court decisions and clarifies congressional intent regarding crimes of violence and their respective penalties;
• The Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act, which would allow local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and pull taxpayer-funded grants to sanctuary cities; and
• Designating “National Police Week”, which expresses support for law enforcement officers across the United States in the pursuit of preserving safe and secure communities.

Additionally, last year, Senator Scott fought to overturn Washington, D.C.’s dangerous reduction in penalties for many violent criminal offenses, including car jackings, robberies and even homicides.
