PHOTO RELEASE: Senator Scott Makes Opportunity Tour Stop in West Virginia

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R–SC) joined U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito for a stop on his national Opportunity Tour in West Virginia. Sens. Scott and Capito visited four stops in Huntington including Core 10 and the Huntington OZ Coalfield Development.

“West Virginia truly is ripe for opportunity. Today’s four stops in Huntington with Senator Capito brought to life so much of what my Investing in Opportunity Act can do,” said Senator Scott. “People are finding purpose, jobs are being produced, and ideas are becoming reality. I can’t wait to see how this community continues to fulfill their potential through the Opportunity Zones and look forward to seeing it prosper.”

“It was so great to hear directly from city leaders how Opportunity Zones can shape growth in Huntington, across West Virginia, and around the country,” Senator Capito said. “I’m grateful to Senator Scott for making this trip and excited West Virginia community leaders are ready to get moving with Opportunity Zones in their hometowns.”

During their visit to Core10, Sens. Scott and Capito met with members of the organization to discuss workforce training, jobs, career and technical education, and how we can bring high-paying tech jobs to rural America. This visit was followed by a tour of abandoned buildings along third avenue. The senators were joined by Congressman Evan Jenkins for a meeting with the mayor of Huntington, Steve Williams.

The Senators also toured The Market Downtown, where they met with local mayors in the Huntington area to discuss the potential for new developments using Opportunity Zones. They also discussed the benefit and impact the zones will have on smaller communities in these distressed areas.

Finally, the senators ended their day with leaders from the community on their Huntington OZ Coalfield Development tour, where they learned more about the workforce training programs that the organization offers. The visit concluded with a roundtable discussion on how the community leaders benefit from Opportunity Zones in their community.

This was Senator Scott’s 8th stop on his national Opportunity Tour, with previous stops in South Carolina, Florida, Washington, DC, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
