Each month ABC15 presents someone in the community with the Jefferson Award, an award that’s been given for 50 years to leaders who inspire action.

This recipient is doing just that as she is a true community servant giving back to our youngest and multiplying good for the future generation of Dillon.

“I wanted the community to also be a part of my family so that’s where the family part comes in with Purnell family services,” said Teresa. “When I first got this building I prayed and said when people walk in I want them to feel like they’re at home.”

However, her impact on her community extends far beyond the walls of a building. Her annual school supply drive provides backpacks filled with supplies for over 300 students.

During last year’s event, another family member saw a need that wasn’t being met. “Last year we were doing a book bag giveaway and my daughter said — no one ever gives anything to the college students,” added Teresa.

“I purchased different supplies — laundry detergent, hygiene products, bath towels, wash cloths you name it anything that you might need for a dorm room,” exclaimed Teresa. “We had over 100 college students come in to get college supplies.” With the help of donors, she was also recently able to award six $1000 scholarships to local students.

“It’s always better to give than to receive,” adds Teresa, ”So I just want to give until I can’t give any more!”
