S.C. plans Opportunity Zones Summit in January

COLUMBIA — Led by Gov. Henry McMaster and in partnership with the Office of U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and the Council of Development Finance Agencies, the State of South Carolina will present the Governor’s Opportunity Zones Summit on Jan. 25, 2019, in Columbia.

Taking place at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, the full-day event will allow attendees to learn how to maximize the positive impacts of Opportunity Zones.

“We’re proud to partner with Sen. Scott and Gov. McMaster to put on an event that will really benefit South Carolinians,” Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt said. “This summit will help the state’s business leaders and communities take full advantage of Opportunity Zones, maximizing the economic growth that will come from this new program.”

“CDFA is honored to be in partnership with the S.C. Department of Commerce in hosting the Governor’s Opportunity Zones Summit,” CDFA President and CEO Toby Rittner said. “Together we are focused on building resources for local communities to help them to unlock capital and maximize the potential for attracting investment in Opportunity Zones.”

Tasked with spurring economic development in areas of need, Opportunity Zones is a community development program established by Congress with legislation passed in 2017. Earlier this year, McMaster partnered with other state and local leaders to announce the submission of 135 Opportunity Zones to the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Including census tracts in each of South Carolina’s 46 counties, the state’s Opportunity Zones will help promote the economic competitiveness of communities in every corner of South Carolina.
